The Department began as the Institute of Social Work Training (ISWT) in 1973 and joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1977 and became its School of Social Work. In 1986, the School was renamed the Department of Applied Social Studies. In 2000, the name of the Department was further modified to Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS). APSS is celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013.

The combined images illustrate the abbreviation “S” of social sciences and symbolizes the Department’s close connection with the families, the community and the society. It also symbolizes the Department’s commitment to education, research and service.
