High Level Forum on Implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction at Local Level was held successfully on 16-17 June 2016 in City Hall, Florence, Italy. The Forum was co-organized by the Government of Italy, the City of Florence and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). Ministers, Mayors, policymakers, local government authorities, private sector, experts and partners from across the world with interests and engagement in local and urban resilience and disaster risk reduction were invited to the Forum.
On 16 June 2016, Dr. Timothy Sim, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Social Science, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, presented a report “Financing risk reduction & resilience in Hong Kong, China” on behalf of the Chairman of Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Health City Association (KTSCHCA), along with a distinguished panel of speakers:
• Mehranaz Mostafa, Chief, Human Security Fund, United Nations, New York;
• Beatriz Yordi, Head of Unit Adaptation, Directorate-General for Climate Action, European Commission;
• Fatimetou Abdel Malick, Commune de Tevragh-Zeina, Mauritania; and
• Harvey Siggs, Councillor, European Union, Committee of the Regions.
The session was moderated by Mohamed Boussraoui, Executive Officer, United Cities and Local Governments, and was well received and fielded numerous questions from different representatives. Ms. Angel Wang and Ms. Kitty Liu of Hong Kong Jockey Club also attended the two-day Forum.
Dr. Sim and his research team will continue to develop with KTSCHCA and other stakeholders the “Making Hong Kong a Resilient City” Programme, which entails using the UNISDR Resilient City assessment tool to review the state of disaster risk reduction development in Hong Kong, as well as to develop more strategies to augment the current good work in disaster risk reduction of Kwai Tsing District.
